The annual Cornhusker State Games Torch Run will not be passing through Chase County this summer.
Rather, the Torch Run, which kicks of today (Thursday) in Scottsbluff, is being held in conjunction with the 2013 LiveWellNebraska Community Tour that includes sports camps and appearances by two Nebraska Olympians in five communities on the route.
From Scottsbluff, the Torch Run route heads south and east through North Platte, Kearney, Grand Island and finally Lincoln, where the State Games will be held July 19-28.
Nebraska Olympians Jordan Larson and Curt Tomasevicz are hosting youth sports camps in the five communities above.
The one in North Platte will be held June 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. CT at Mid-Plains Community College.
Youths age five to 18 can still sign up for the $20 camp in North Platte or at any of the other locations by going on line at: cornhuskerstategames.com/olympic_athlete_clinics
Youths signing up by June 20 at 5 p.m. will be guaranteed a T-shirt, according to Torch Run coordinator Pat Hagedorn. Sizes may be limited after that date.
The Torch arrival in each of those five communities will serve as a highlight with activities also including health screenings, wellness award presentations, National Guard attractions, vendor giveaways and games for the kids.
