Wind, rough tough on CCS golfers at state PDF Print E-mail

High winds, cool temperatures and thick rough proved to be key factors for the CCS golfers at the Class C state tournament in Lincoln.
Coach Larry Munger said the wind on the first day, Tuesday, May 21 blew harder as the day progressed. On Wednesday, he said it was the opposite.
Mix those conditions with some light showers and cooler temperatures to create some challenging playing conditions.
Munger said the golfers paid a penalty for not keeping the ball in the fairway. He said the rough was about six inches of native-type grasses. Finding the ball wasn’t a problem, hitting it well was.
To a man, Munger said each would say they didn’t play as well as they were capable of.         Freddie Kasselman led the Longhorns with round of 88-90 for a 178 total. That put him in  a tie for 54th place in the 98-golfer field.
Curtis Laird and Ryan Moline each finished tied for 76th with 191 totals.
Darin Knobbe was 95th with a 207 and Tyler Jennings tied for 96th at 208.
While the Longhorns finished at the bottom of the 15-team field, Munger said there was no doubt they deserved to be there after their district performance where they placed third.
There would be a lot of people that didn’t qualify who would have liked to have traded spots with the Longhorns, Munger noted.
Overall, he felt it was a great experience for the kids and builds some foundation for next year.
