Year’s first quarter of sales tax yields nearly $112,000 PDF Print E-mail

January, February and March brought in a total of $111,919.57 in sales tax revenue to the city of Imperial.
January proved to be the best month in total collections with $38,928.40 electronically deposited in the city’s account.
February added $34,516.46, while another $38,474.71 was deposited from March sales.
Each month of the year’s first quarter of sales tax were far below that of December 2012, which had the largest monthly total ever in nearly six years since Imperial started its one percent sales tax on qualified purchases.
When each month’s funds are received, the city sales tax paid on vehicles is moved to another account for use in the city street department fund as required by law.
What is left is split 50/50 between economic development and community development projects approved by the city council.
Recommendation for spending from the economic development funds comes to the council from a Citizens Advisory Committee, while the council solely directs spending of the community development side of the funds, often after requests of local groups or organizations. Use of all city sales tax funds must have a council majority vote.
Some of the recent projects for which sales tax money was used include the parking improvements at Imperial Manor and new playground equipment in the Max Addition Park.
The city’s proceeds come from the one percent sales tax added to the state’s 5.5 percent on qualified purchases in the city limits.
Imperial voters approved the city sales tax in November 2006, and it went into effect the following April.
