Weather cooperated and so did the fish at this year’s Ron Berry Memorial Kids Fishing Day at Champion Lake.
Saturday’s event sponsored by the Southwest Nebraska Izaak Walton League (Ike’s) drew 27 youngsters, who spent most of the day learning the art of fishing and were pretty successful at it, according to reports.
Organizer Clint Johnson said fishing was concentrated on the north side of the lake, “and the kids caught a lot of fish.”
Youths had the help from several Ike’s members and parents during the four-hour event. They also benefited from the homemade lures given to them by Lester Harmon, Johnson noted.
Youths and the adults broke for lunch around noon. The Imperial Eagles donated the hamburger, hot dogs and buns, while Ike’s provided chips, beans and beverages, all free of charge to the participants.
The annual kids’ fishing day is named in memory of Ron Berry, a longtime Ike’s member who loved fishing.
