Imperial baseball and softball players are getting the itch, with ball seasons just around the corner.
First games for several of the Imperial teams start next week in Imperial and on the road.
T-ball programs for boys and girls age five to seven will start June 3 and 4 at 5 p.m. Boys will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, while girls have a Tuesday-Thursday schedule, all at Schroder Park through the month of June starting at 5 p.m. each night. Rebecca Koellner is coordinating the boys’ T-ball, while Mercedes Hauxwell has the girls.
Summer Recreation Director Bruce Peterson said there are 179 youths registered as of this week for Imperial baseball and softball teams/programs, including 99 boys and 80 girls.
Here’s a recap of the teams starting play next week.
Boys’ little league (age 8-11) has fielded four teams for weekly games at Schroeder Park’s north and south fields. First night of play is Monday, May 27, and all games start at 7 p.m.
Coaches are Bruce Peterson, Gregg Smith, Alex Strand and Dan Leibhart. They will conclude regular season play on June 24, with the tournament set for June 26 and July 1.
The girls’ equivalent of little league is the Tri-County North Youth Pony Softball League (age 8-11), which has a traveling schedule.
Imperial fielded two teams for the Pony League, coached by Jerry Mastin and Tiffany Reeves. First games are set for Tuesday, May 28, at 6:30 p.m. MT. Besides Imperial, teams from Grant, Hershey, Paxton, Sutherland and Wallace are in the league.
The Pony League tournament will be June 27-30 in Sutherland.
Imperial’s Pee Wee baseball team (age 12-13) will start play with a home game next Wednesday, May 29, against Ogallala Orange at 6 p.m. MT
Larry Peterson serves as Pee Wee coach this season. Games are played Wednesday and Fridays in the Tri-County North League. Other teams in the Pee Wee League are Grant, Hershey (2), Ogallala (2), Paxton (2), Sutherland and Wallace.
The Pee Wee tournament is set for July 10-14 in Paxton.
Heidi Wheeler is coaching Imperial’s junior girls’ softball team (age 12-14), which hosts a home game against Grant for its opener on Tuesday, May 28.
Also playing in the Tri-County North League, other junior softball teams include Grant, Paxton, Sutherland and Wallace.
Playing regular season games on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the tournament will be held July 11-13 in Wallace.
Peterson said there will be a senior girls’ softball team that will play in the Tri-County South League, since the north league has no other senior softball teams. Denise Smith is coach, and attended a meeting Tuesday this week to finalize the schedule.
Imperial is expected to field both a junior and senior Legion baseball team this summer, coached by Brad Moline. Their first game is a home double-header on May 31 against Ogallala.
Imperial will be the site for a co-ed softball league again this summer, with games starting Monday, June 3.
Denise Smith is league coordinator and said she has eight teams committed to compete at this time. Games will be played at Schroeder Park’s middle field.
