Spring field work off to good start PDF Print E-mail

Farmers have been anxious to get wheat fields fertilized and seedbeds tilled to make ready for this year’s corn crop. Above, Mike Heitt with Crop Productions Services in Imperial spent the day Monday south of Wauneta spraying wheat fields with fertilizer and herbicide. The wheat appears to be bouncing back after a hard freeze nipped the tops of the plant. Fortunately, the wheat hadn’t matured to the point where serious damage could have occurred. Clouds of dust could be seen throughout rural Chase and Dundy Counties as farmers are making their initial tillage passes on their corn ground. Or, in the case below, it’s all being done in one pass as seen on the Monty Hansen farm south of Imperial Monday. Ground temperatures rose late last week with higher temperatures but will drop some again this week with rain, snow and temperatures in the 40s predicted. (Republican photos)
