Art students at CCS came home with three individual awards and an honorable mention for a group project at the annual McCook Community College Paint-In and art competition.
High school art teacher Chelsea Zuege took a team of six seniors for the paint-in competition, as well as 20 individual art pieces created by CCS students for the art contest.
In the paint-in, for which CCS received the only honorable mention awarded, students were given the topic, “Standing Out  From a Crowd,” and then spent a few minutes planning and designing.
Then, they had two and a half hours to create a 3.5 by six-foot painting using tempera paint. The CCS design depicted the busy-ness of a city sidewalk with a figure in the center stopping to “smell the roses.”
CCS seniors on the team were Sabrina Hayes, Taylor Sims, Emily Owens, Courtney Kunnemann, Abby Polly and Michaela Space.
Twenty teams were entered in the paint-in. First place went to Southwest High School, second to Victory Christian Academy, while Sutherland High School took third.
CCS juniors and seniors submitted 20 individual art pieces in the art contest, which included entries from 19 area schools. First, second and third in addition to a Judge’s Choice were awarded in each division.
Taylor Sims took first place in the mixed media division with her work titled “Light.”
Bethany Sorensen placed second in the painting division with “Glamour,” while classmate Andrea Hogsett placed third in the same division with “In the City.”
Other art contest divisions included digital photography, three-dimensional/sculpture, pottery, printmaking and drawing.
Judging this year’s student exhibition and Paint-In was Anna Seeber-Shaw, a professional artist from Oberlin, Kan.
All of the student artwork had been displayed for two weeks through last Friday on the MCC campus.
