Practice burn yields valuable experience for IVFD PDF Print E-mail

People in the Champion area Saturday may have thought a fire was underway southwest of that community. Rather, it was a valuable practice exercise involving the Imperial Volunteer Fire Department (IVFD), which serves Imperial and the rural district around it. The house, which had been unoccupied for some time, was donated for the practice burn by Helen and Ken Schilke. Fire Chief Nick Schultz said 11 members of the department participated in the exterior burn exercise. Skills targeted were protection of other structures, use of foam, water transfer and pump operations. Preparation for such a practice takes some time, the fire chief noted, as the department must inspect the structure as per EPA and Fire Marshal requirements to determine if lead or asbestos are present. If either or both are detected, it cannot be burned unless they are removed by the owner ahead of time. Schultz said the structure provided a great training tool. (Courtesy photo)
