Six Longhorn wrestlers traveled to Southern Valley High School for the C-4 District Wrestling Tournament in hopes of earning a spot at the 2013 State Wrestling Tournament in Omaha.
Unfortunately, it was not to be.
In one of the toughest districts in Class C, the Longhorns were unable to secure a spot at the state tourney.
Michael May started out in the 138 pound division winning his first two matches on Friday. In the semi-finals Saturday morning, May faced number one seeded Brandon Nichols (36-2) of Bridgeport.
In a very good match, May was able to hang on until the end of the third period when Nichols secured a pinning combination with just 12 seconds remaining.
This sent May to the consolations, where he would face number two seeded Tucker Bergquist (35-8) of Southern Valley, who had been upset in the second round.
May was pinned half-way through the third period in the heart-break round to dash his hopes of a state tournament appearance and end his high school wrestling career with a senior year record of 29-17.
Jake Lueth was the only other wrestler able to pull off a win in the tournament.
After beating Kieron Rice (12-16) of Ainsworth, Lueth faced Marcus Nelson (30-4) of Valentine. Nelson is the defending state champion from last year. Lueth wrestled well, but after Nelson was penalized in the third period for an illegal grip, he seemed to change gears and pinned Lueth with 31 seconds remaining in the match.
In the second round of consolations, Lueth faced Austin Brown (25-15) of Loomis-Bertrand. Brown won the match 4-1, ending the season for Lueth with a record of (22-16).
Caleb Bubak (3-16), Hunter Dillan (4-21), David Almanza (7-21) and Khris Kuhlmann (6-18) were all unable to score a victory at the district meet.
