By Jan Schultz The Imperial Republican A slow start in Tuesday’s C1-11 subdistrict basketball opener was hard to make up for the Chase County girls, as they lost a 45-23 contest to Gothenburg. The loss in Lexington ended the Lady Longhorns’ basketball season with a 7-18 record. Gothenburg, the top seed in the tournament, went up 17-0 in the first quarter before the Lady Longhorns could score. Chase County’s first points came with just 12 seconds left in the first when Makala Bartels hit a bucket and was fouled. She hit the free throw, and Chase County trailed 17-3 as the quarter ended. The deficit was too much to make up as the game finished. No. 3 seed Ogallala and No. 2 Cozad faced off in the other game Tuesday. Ogallala won, 41-35, and will meet Gothenburg tonight (Thursday) for the C1-11 subdistrict title. The C1-11 winner Thursday will advance to districts where they will meet the C1-12 winner for a trip to the state tournament Feb. 28, March 1-2. A full recap of Chase County’s subdistrict game will follow in next week’s issue.
