Riverside Discovery Center returning to SCORE PDF Print E-mail

The Riverside Discovery Center will be at SCORE camp in June with a variety of their education animals.
Riverside Discovery Center (Zoo) is located in Scottsbluff and is home to over 150 animals and over 60 species. SCORE campers will have a chance to see some unique native, and non-native, animals up close while they learn about their adaptations, where they call home and what they can do to conserve the outdoors.
“This program will be tons of fun for campers of all ages” says Kim Miedema, the education curator at Riverside Discovery Center.
“On top of having the opportunity to see, and maybe touch, some live animals campers will also get to study some unique biofacts (such as pelts and skulls) and play some games all while learning about some amazing wildlife,” she said.
Miedema will present programs on Wednesday, June 12, to first and second graders and Thursday, June 13, to third and fourth graders at Champion Lake. Some of the animals may be available to view at the open house, the date for which is yet to be determined.
Miedema has worked in the environmental educational field for about seven years, teaching people of all ages about wildlife and the outdoors at nature centers, zoos and other nonprofit organizations.
She loves to travel and experience the outdoors in all seasons:  hiking/ camping or kayaking in the summer and downhill skiing in the winter.  She has had the opportunity to work in many different places of the country and enjoys exploring what different areas have to offer.
“My passion is wildlife and teaching people about different species and what they can do to protect the great outdoors and the animals that call it home,” she said.
Riverside Zoo returns to SCORE for its fourth time, but has not been here recently. A lot of changes were made due to a flood. The entire Zoo was moved to a new location in Scottsbluff. Check them out on Facebook or at
The Riverside Discovery Center program is being funded by Prairie States Communications.
