Because of the availability of space with no school activities planned for the day, Ogallala was able to host the Chase County Wrestling Invitational on Jan. 17.
Only 11 of the 16 scheduled teams were able to make it to the tourney and many of those had a depleted numbers of wrestlers due to illness.
Chase County finished eighth, their best finish to date for the team. Individually Michael May placed second; Caleb Bubak third; and Hunter Dillan and David Almanza both placed fourth.
May faced top seeded Tyrell Reichert of Dundy County in the finals. Reichert showed why he was the top seed by pinning all of his opponents in the first period of each match.
Bubak didn’t get much work in the day for his third place finish. Only three wrestlers entered in the 113 pound weight class. After losing to eventual champion Nathan Chrisman in 45 seconds, Bubak had a bye in the consolation for third place.
Dillan continues to show improvement as he went 1-2 on the day for fourth place. In his semi-finals match, Dillan secured a pin with just three seconds left in the second period.
Almanza also had a better day going 1-2. In the consolation semi-finals, Almanza had his fastest pin of the year, defeating Corey Anderson of Hitchcock County in just 35 seconds.
Khris Kuhlmann saw some good competition in the 152 pound division and was unable to secure a victory.
