Southwest Public Power District announced last week that there will be a 3.3 percent average overall increase to electric rates, effective Jan. 1, 2013.
According to Curtis Kayton, SWPPD general manager, the primary reason for this rate is to pass on a 3.75 percent rate increase from Nebraska Public Power District.
SWPPD hired Bob McDonald with ESC, Inc., a Colorado-based consultant, to finalize a rate increase proposal. His proposal was presented to and approved by the SWPPD board of directors on Nov. 19
Kayton noted the actual percentage rate increase amounts in 2013 will vary depending on the type of customer class. The increase will be a different percentage for residential customers than it will be for business customers.
SWPPD serves customers in eastern parts of Chase County.
