Head Coach Matt Vlasin decided to keep the majority of his wrestlers in the junior varsity division at the Sidney Invite on Saturday.
With only 2 wrestlers competing in the varsity division, Chase County came in at the bottom spot with nine total points.
Michael May competed in the 145 pound class and Jake Lueth at 152. Due to strict NSAA weight loss regulations, May was unable to drop down a weight class until the Monday following the Sidney tournament.
Beginning Jan. 5, May and Lueth both plan to drop a weight class and they will finish the year at 138 and 145. This will open up the 152 pound spot for Khris Kuhlmann.
In the varsity meet, May started out with a victory in his first match which set him up with top seeded Jonathon Withrow of Kimball, who had drawn a bye in the first round.
May stuck with Withrow, (the eventual 145 pound champion) throughout the first two periods, but seemed to run out of gas a little in the third and was pinned with just 26 seconds left.
May came back to win his next two matches in the consolations to claim the third place medal.
Lueth had a rough day, losing his first match to Nery Cabrera of Lexington, (whom he had beaten just a week earlier) by pinfall in 4:36. After a bye in the first round of wrestle-backs, Lueth faced Trenton Applegate, (13-2), who was upset in the semi-finals to drop him into the consolation bracket.
Although Lueth held his own in the first two periods, Applegate was able to secure a victory by pinfall in 1:23 of the third period to end Lueth’s day.
Chase County took four wrestlers to compete in the junior varsity division of the tournament.
Hunter Dillan and David Almanza each went 1-2 on the day while Caleb Bubak went 0-3, and Kuhlmann went 0-2.
Coach Vlasin is hoping that the mat time will help these wrestlers out after the holiday break as they will all be competing in the varsity tournament at Ogallala on Jan. 5.

Next action for the Longhorn wrestlers will be the Ogallala Invitational which features a little different format than the other tournaments. The 10 teams will be split into two groups. Five teams will compete in one gym and five in another.
Each group of five teams will dual all other teams in their group. At the conclussion of those four duals, the two groups will be matched up again, with the top record from one site facing the top record from the other site. The second best records will face each other and so on down the line.
At the time of this printing the splits were not available, but Coach Vlasin beleived Chase County would be in the group that wrestles in the Ogallala High School gym. The other site is the downtown auditorium.
Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 8:30 am on Jan. 5, 2013.
