The student-sponsored American Red Cross Bloodmobile surpassed its goal last week. A total of 65 units of blood were donated, above the 59 unit goal.
In addition, school nurse Angie Paisley said the Bloodmobile’s goal was to obtain seven double red units, and nine were donated.
Paisley explained double red donations. Individuals with O negative, A negative, B negative or O positive blood may donate two units of red cells.
The blood is taken out, run through a machine, and the red blood cells retained, Paisley said, while a saline-plasma solution is returned to the donor.
The red blood cells count as two units, she said. O negative is especially desired, she said, as it can be given to anyone during an emergency.
The next student-sponsored Bloodmobile will be January 24. If the students make their goals at the three Bloodmobiles they run, they receive donations from the American Red Cross to be used as scholarships for graduating seniors.
