Six area high school volleyball teams, including three from the SPVA conference, are in Grand Island this week, Nov. 8-10, for the state tournament.
Chase County’s Lady Longhorns missed the cut, but three of its fellow SPVA schools—North Platte St. Pat’s, Sutherland and Hershey—qualified.
In addition, Sidney, also on the CCS schedule, and other area teams from Ogallala and Brady qualified.
The six area schools will compete in five different classes at state.
Two of the SPVA schools, top-seeded North Platte St. Pat’s (29-1) and No. 8 Hershey (17-10), face off in the first round of Class C2 today (Thursday) at Grand Island Northwest at 9 a.m. CT.
Hershey got into the tournament on one of the two C2 wild cards after losing in the subdistrict finals to St. Pat’s.
Sutherland, which handed St. Pat’s its only loss this season at the SPVA conference finals in Imperial, is the No. 2 seed in Class D1.
The Lady Sailors (24-6) will face Alma (23-8) in first round action Thursday at Grand Island Central Catholic at 11 a.m. CT
In Class C1, Ogallala defeated Chadron in the district finals Friday to qualify, but Chadron got in on wild card points. And, the two are paired up again for the first match at state.
No. 3 seed Chadron (27-3) faces No. 6 Ogallala (27-10) Thursday at Grand Island Senior High at 4 p.m. CT for the rematch.
Sidney (25-6) is the No. 3 seed in Class B and plays No. 6 Norris (23-5) Thursday at the Heartland Events Center, while Brady (23-7), the No. 8 seed in D2, will go up against top-seeded Mead (23-7) Thursday at GICC at 2 p.m. CT.
All of Saturday’s finals will be aired from the Heartland Events Center on NET starting with Class D2 at 9 a.m. CT.
