Come for night of fun with locals, Harlem Ambassadors PDF Print E-mail

By Jan Schultz, The Imperial Republican News Editor

I was going to write about the never-ending presidential campaign and the “he said, she said” accounts that too often dominate our major news reporters’ lead stories.
Or, I toyed with discussing the recent terror attack on our U.S. Embassy in Libya and the deaths of four Americans  there.
But, being tired of all the politics and the attacks between candidates, maybe it’s a good thing the Harlem Ambassadors are coming to town Thursday night this week.
It will provide some entertaining relief to all of the politics that constantly blares at us from all angles.
A team of 16 basketball players from the Imperial area will go up against the Harlem Ambassadors. The visitors are known for their unique brand of Harlem-style basketball that is expected to include high-flying slam dunks, “dazzling ball-handling tricks” and a few comedy routines, as well.
Unfortunately, some of Imperial’s players might not know what they’re in store for at Thursday’s 7 p.m. contest.
But, based on who I see on the Imperial line-up, it’s certain they’ll all be good sports.
What attracted me to the event is some of what I read about the Harlem Ambassadors themselves.
Players are selected not only for their basketball skills, but also for their positive lifestyles and ability to truly be “ambassadors” both on-and-off the court.
A look at their annual schedule and the hundreds of games they play shows me they must be doing a good job in their roles as “ambassadors” to our youths—emphasizing the importance of staying in school and remaining drug-free. Many of those communities, like Imperial, have scheduled return performances from the Harlem Ambassadors.
Kids are expected to be part of some of the fun activities during Thursday night’s game.
Tickets are still on sale at the four Imperial banks, Fine Things and this newspaper. Advance prices, which are $1 cheaper than at the door, are good until 12 noon Thursday.
Don’t miss out on a fun night of entertainment.
