Hot. Hot. Hot.
That best describes the conditions that Chase County cross country runners competed in to open the season Friday at Cambridge.
Despite the heat, the Longhorns finished third in both the boys’ and girls’ races.
Coach Carl Zuege said he had a number of runners who were competing in their first-ever cross country race so he was pleased with the overall outcome.
He said the girls’  third place finish “was as much as I had hoped.”
Freshman Alyssa Moreno won a medal in her first-ever meet, finishing eighth.
Junior Mallory Coleman edged into the top 15 for a medal as well, finishing 12th.
Zuege was also impressed with Maddison Vaverek’s effort, finishing 20th in the 47-runner field.
Sandra Jones finished 25th, followed by Suzy Kasselman at 29th and Charlie Ann Carter at 36th. Andrea Hogsett, running as a jayvee, finished 40th in the field.
In the boys’ race, Chase County finished a point away from second, despite losing Andrew Vaverek to heat during the race.
The top three Longhorns, led by sophomore Holden Dreiling, finished 8th, 10th and 12th.
Freshman Indy Smith finished in the medals with a 10th place finish followed by junior Garret Thompson in 12th.
Zuege said that had Vaverek been able to finish the race, the Longhorns would have easily captured second in the team race won by Dundy County.
First-timer Mason Meeske finished 25th in the field, followed by Korey Krutsinger, who was 28th in the 39-runner field.
Home meet here today
The Longhorns get to run on their home course today (Thursday) with the Longhorn Invitational.
