Players in this year’s FFA-sponsored volleyball tournament on the Fourth of July didn’t mind taking a spill into the water-filled courts of sand.
With temperatures eclipsing the century mark in an extended heat spell, some may have fallen down on purpose.
Thirteen teams competed in this year’s tournament sponsored by the Imperial FFA chapter. It was held in conjunction with the annual Helen Fanning Memorial Fun Day hosted by the Imperial Volunteer Fire Department at the Wellington football field.
At the end of the single elimination tournament, the team of Alex Strand, Morgan Strand, Molly Strand and Alex Sharp emerged the winners, and took home the top prize of $50 in Chamber Bucks.
Second place went to the team of Brian Strand, Adam Vlasin, Sarah Hammond and Melissa Winkelmann. They won $30 in Chamber Bucks.
Placing third, and winning $20 in Chamber Bucks, was the team of Shane German, Justin German, Bethany Sorensen and Kaycee Bubak.
Teams had to be comprised of two men and two women, entering seventh grade or older. Teams advanced after winning the best two out of three.
FFA Advisor Jeremy Vlasin said a couple of tents were set up to provide some shade for participants in last week’s extreme heat. Several spectators in the stands were shaded by umbrellas.
In addition, a tank of cold bottles of water stood nearby.
