Registrations now being taken for March 15 umpire clinic PDF Print E-mail
    Summer’s not far off, and that means baseball is just around the corner.
    Area residents who want to earn a little extra cash this summer might want to consider umpiring in the city of Imperial leagues.
    Umpires who work behind the plate or on the bases for little league games and the older teams in Imperial are paid. City Recreation Director Darrin Schultz will be coordinating umpires for those games this summer.  
    Those who want to brush up on the rules can take part in a clinic in Imperial on Sunday afternoon, March 15, beginning at 1 p.m.
    The clinic at Campbell field will be conducted by Larry Ross of Scottsbluff, Area D liaison for the American Legion Baseball Association in Nebraska.
    What will be learned during the afternoon March 15 will be helpful in umpiring at any of the baseball games in Imperial.
    Those who complete the clinic, pass the Legion baseball open book exam and send in the paperwork to the state organization will be able to umpire at Legion games here or in other communities. Completion of the clinic will also qualify them to be considered for umpiring at Legion tournaments.
    Ross said the combined clinic and rules meeting will include mechanics, proper positioning for calls and how to avoid conflicts. He’ll address techniques for behind the plate and on the bases.
    Cost for the clinic is $15.
    People can pick up a major league rules book at most sporting goods stores to review the rules ahead of time if they choose.
