Playing with what Coach Carl Zuege termed “their best energy of the year,” the Imperial Longhorns snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 57-39 win Monday.
The win came over Gordon-Rushville (G-R) in the first round of the C1-12 subdistricts in Alliance. It improved the Longhorns’ record to 5-14.
The win snapped a nine-game skid that dates back to Jan. 15.
Zuege was pleased how his kids came in and established themselves early in the contest.
The Longhorns built a 15-8 lead  in the first quarter on eight points from Tanner Stromberger.
Stromberger got the start in place of Josh Schuman, who  missed the game due to illness.
In the second quarter, Colin Larson hit three baskets and Stromberger added four more points allowing the Longhorns to maintain their seven-point lead going into the second half.
In the third, it was Daniel Regier who led the Longhorns, scoring seven, along with another five from Stromberger. Larson added a trey to boost the lead to 10, 44-34, going into the final eight minutes.
The Longhorns shut down G-R in the fourth, limiting them to just five points.
At the other end of the court, G-R kept sending the Longhorns to the line. The ’Horns capitalized, with nine of their 13 4th quarter points coming from the charity line.
The 57-39 win advanced the Longhorns into the semi-finals of the subdistrict against top-rated Chadron Tuesday night.
Zuege said the Longhorns were ready to take on Chadron. As the underdog, it takes the pressure off the kids, he said. “They just need to go in and do what we do best,” he said.
Coming off the win, he said he was pleased with how the Longhorns responded inside without Schuman. He said Stromberger, Regier and Daniel Morales all did their share underneath.
Stromberger led the team with 18 along with 9 from Regier, Zuege noted.
Colin Larson also finished in double figures with 11.

Regular season ends with loss
The Longhorns ended their regular season Friday with a 34-59 loss here to Sutherland, this year’s SPVA tourney champion.
Zuege said the Longhorns opened up well offensively, scoring 12 in the first quarter, but had trouble stopping Sutherland’s offensive attack.
Zuege said Sutherland took advantage of their 3-2 zone with easy backside baskets and offensive rebounds and put-backs.
Zuege changed to a 2-3 zone which took away Sutherland’s advantage underneath as the Longhorns limited them to just 11.
However, the Longhorns still trailed by nine at half, 21-30.
Zuege said he knew the Longhorns had to open strong in the third. But it was Sutherland who grabbed the momentum with the first eight points of the quarter.
They finished the quarter with 13 while the Longhorns could only post 13 in the whole second half.
Sutherland likes to play a sagging man defense, which requires patience, Zuege said. “We didn’t show great patience.”
Schuman was the only double-figure scorer with 10.
