It was a valiant effort, but Chase County just couldn’t get enough shots to fall Tuesday night in the semi-finals of the girls’ C1-12 subdistrict basketball tournament.
The Lady Longhorns lost to subdistrict top-seeded Kimball, 48-41, in tournament play at Alliance.
The loss ended Chase County’s season at 6-15, as Kimball advanced to the subdistrict finals tonight (Thursday) against either No. 2 seed Chadron or No. 3 seed Gordon/Rushville.
Kimball was able to make their free throws at the end of the game, dropping in 10 of them in the final two minutes as Chase County was forced to foul.
After trailing 8-2 in the first quarter, the Lady Longhorns scored nine unanswered points, taking an 11-8 lead as the first quarter ended.
Chase County put up only six in the second quarter, while Kimball added 15 and took a six-point halftime lead.
While Chase County fell behind by as much as 12 in the third quarter, they pulled within four points, 34-38, with two minutes left in the game. Nichole Dickey hit a trey and Morgan Strand followed up with a two-pointer to cut Kimball’s lead to four.
But, then, the Lady Longhorns were forced to foul and in those last two minutes, Kimball scored 10 points on free throws.
Scoring for Chase County was led by Dickey, who had 16, and Morgan Strand with 14.
Also scoring were Lexee Reichert 4, Kim Brophy 3, Molly Strand 2 and Karlee Palmer 2.
Big win in opener
Chase County never trailed in the first round of subdistricts, Monday night, beating Mitchell 70-41.
Coach Marc Mroczek said those 70 points were the most points his girls’ team has scored in a long time.
Eight girls scored for Chase County, led by a strong offensive effort from Morgan Strand, who put up 25 points in the game.
Also scoring were Karlee Palmer 11, Kim Brophy 9, Nichole Dickey 8, Lexee Reichert 8, Jilanne German 5, Molly Strand 3 and Shannon Liewer 1.
A complete wrap-up of the subdistrict games this week and a season review will be in  next week’s issue.
