Six Chase County wrestlers competed in Saturday’s tournament at Southwest High School, which closed out the regular wrestling season.
Jeremy Mathews and Justin Lueth both placed first in the tournament, while Jeremiah Lueth earned the runner-up hardware.
Two of the Longhorns who had planned to wrestle Saturday, Sean Langin and Keithan Cochran, both sat out of the tournament due to slight injuries. Joel Fisher didn’t compete due to sickness.
Trevor Roenfeldt hadn’t planned to compete because he had already compiled the maximum number of points before Saturday.
Justin Lueth at 135 lbs. defeated Taylor Premer of Red Cloud/Blue Hill, who had a 24-2 record and was top-seeded in Saturday’s tournament. Lueth’s win came in the semi-finals, and he went on to easily win the championship with a 0:59 pin in the finals.
At 171 lbs., Mathews easily advanced through the bracket to face Cambridge’s Taylor Lewis in the finals, where Mathews squeaked out a 2-0 win.
Coach Matt Vlasin said it was the third time Mathews has faced the Cambridge wrestler this season, and they have all been tight matches. Saturday was no different, but Mathews has won all three matches against the Cambridge wrestler.
Jeremiah Lueth earned a pin and major decision enroute to the championship match. There, he lost a close 3-1 decision to top seeded  Jordan James of Franklin.
Also wrestling for Chase County during the day were Cody Cravey,  Trevor Fuehrer and Nathan Hinojosa.
