The high school wrestling season is winding down, but meets like last Saturday’s at North Platte St. Pat’s remain important, according to Longhorn Coach Matt Vlasin.
Chase County finished second in the meet, which drew mostly Class D schools, but Vlasin said it’s more about getting kids in matches, rather than team placings, at this time of the season.
“Our goal is getting our kids those individual wins,” he said.
In that area, the team was largely successful, with all but one of the 10 Longhorns bringing home hardware. St. Pat’s awarded six places in their meet.
Jeremy Mathews, Chase County’s 171 lb. wrestler, earned first place in that class, but also earned another title at the meet—Outstanding Wrestler.
Mathews earned the extra medal for that title on a vote from the coaches, after finishing the day with a 6-3 decision over 171 lb. top seed, Tyler Bartak of Anselmo-Merna. Mathews was seeded second in his division that day.
Another individual championship was earned by Justin Lueth, who pinned his way to the championship in the 135 lb. class. He was also second seeded in his class, but beat top-seeded Tyler Fredrick of Hershey in the finals.
Second place medals were won by Keithan Cochran 103 lbs., Jeremiah Lueth 145 lbs., and Sean Langin at 160 lbs. Lueth also knocked off the top-seed from Anselmo-Merna in his semi-finals match.
Other medalists included Tyler Roenfeldt, fourth; Joel Fisher, Trevor Fuehrer and Nathan Hinojosa, all with fifth place.
Coach Vlasin said his team wrestled very well Saturday, and was glad to see their intensity return, after it seemed to be missing at the dual two nights earlier.
Team scoring was St. Pat’s 154, Chase County 140, Anselmo-Merna 131, Sedgewick County 120, Southwest 115, Cambridge 100, Hershey 88, Garden County 86.5, Hyannis 53, Mullen 50, Dundy County 31 and North Platte JV 25.

Four Longhorns competed at Friday’s Curtis Medicine Valley varsity tournament, and two won medals.
Coach Vlasin said these four attended the meet to make up one missed earlier in the season.
