Despite giving up four matches at the end due to pins or open slots, Chase County edged Holyoke, Colo., 38-36, in a wrestling dual last Thursday in Imperial.
The dual started at the 135 lb. weight class. Chase County captured most of the middle and heavier weight matches early in the meet, giving the Longhorns a commanding 38-12 lead before heading into the light weight classes, where they were 0-2 in head-to-head matches and lost two by forfeit.
At dual matches in Nebraska, there is a draw for the weight class at which the meet will start. Previously, duals started at the lightest  weight class, now 103 lbs.
A big key to Chase County’s victory last week, said Coach Matt Vlasin, was sophomore Trevor Fuehrer’s win with a second period pin at the 189 lb. match.
Fuehrer moved up two weight classes from 160 lbs., which he’s wrestled previously, to the open slot against Holyoke.
Vlasin said they had expected to be open at that weight, which would have been a guaranteed six points for Holyoke. Fuehrer offered to wrestle in the spot, despite the size disadvantage.
“We certainly didn’t expect a pin from Fuehrer. That was huge,” Vlasin said.
Instead of losing six points, Chase County gained six in team points from Fuehrer’s pin.
Overall, Vlasin said the entire team wrestled well against Holyoke. He said they were more “fired up” than their last dual, which the Longhorns lost to Ogallala.
It was also key, Vlasin noted, that some of the Longhorns won matches against Holyoke wrestlers who they lost to at Imperial’s tournament earlier this month.
