Ordinary people are extraordinary heroes PDF Print E-mail

By Jana Pribbeno, The Imperial Republican Ad Representative

Over the past couple of weeks it has been a pleasure working with our local veterans collecting their photos and information to be used in our two page layout in this week’s edition of the paper.
As these ordinary people came in, they also began to share their stories with me. I have witnessed hugs, tears and humor as their adventures were unfolded. I also regret that I could not take all the information and put it on the pages, at this time.
Throughout the couple of weeks, I have been able to travel, in my mind, with them to places only they have seen— from the European Theatre of WWII with “the greatest generation” of veterans to the Yalu River of the Korean war to Saigon and the jungles of Vietnam to the sands of Desert Storm and the calm of peacetime and stateside service that we all wish for. I also hold in my heart those who are currently serving in any division of our Armed Forces—may God be with you.
I realize that some veterans have chosen not to submit photos and information for this publication. I respect you for whatever reason it might be. War is never easy to talk about. I also acknowledge those who never made it home and those who have had life-changing injuries.
Whether it has been the first calling of war to the present calling of today’s military—there is a common bond between all veterans. They have willingly made unimaginable sacrifices to protect our country. With that we are forever grateful. You are all extraordinary heroes. Be proud veterans and THANKS!
