Spectacular. Fabulous. Incredible. Something special. Fairgoers and state fair officials alike used these words to best describe the new Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island.
Just 13 months ago, the site stood bare. Now, the new State Fair, located at Grand Island’s Fonner Park, stretches more than a half mile with facilities second to none.
State Fair Board Treasurer Dan Kunnemann of Imperial said it’s simply amazing what they were able to accomplish in just 13 months.
And for the skeptics who said the population in out-state Nebraska could never support the state fair: bull!
Attendance figures at this year’s fair of 309,400 exceeded the 2008 totals in Lincoln. The 2009 farewell to Lincoln event drew an extra 57,000 people, setting the state fair record for attendance with 367,203.
Kunnemann said a survey completed last week during the fair showed fairgoers from 83 of Nebraska’s 93 counties, 30 states and Canada.
