Those coming to watch Saturday night’s fireworks show in Imperial will be able to enter from both the north and south sides of the fairgrounds, according to city officials.
That’s due, in part, because most of East 5th Street will reopen at 12 noon Friday, said City Public Works Supt. Pat Davison.
The street has been closed for several weeks while a new seven-inch concrete surface was poured on top of four inches of millings. There were also drainage improvements made.
While the majority of East 5th will be opened back up this Friday, Davison noted two intersections will remain closed because construction is continuing there—East 5th and Holland Sts., and East 5th and Highway 61.
The entrances to the east United Methodist Church parking lot off 5th Street will also remain closed, but access is still open from East 4th St. The parking lot entrances and the East 5th/Holland intersections should open by next week, Davison said.
Davison said the East 5th and Highway 61 intersection will remain closed for several more weeks. After noon Friday, access to Imperial Yost Farm Supply there will be made from its west entrance on East 5th.
Those wanting to watch the fireworks show from the north side of the grounds will have two access points Saturday, according to Davison.
Even though work is also underway on East 9th Street, people will be able to access the fairgrounds via the entrance at East 9th and Chase Sts.
Access to the north side of the fairgrounds can also be made through the alley just north of East 8th and Park Sts (north of the expo area).
Saturday’s fireworks show is being expanded this year in conjunction with Imperial’s 125th birthday celebration this weekend.
The show will get underway about 9:15 p.m., according to members of the Imperial Volunteer Fire Department.
