The oldest house in town? PDF Print E-mail

By Carolyn Lee
The Imperial Republican

Dick and Joan Bartels have been told that their house may just be the oldest one in town. Unfortunately, the records that may have substantiated that claim all burned when the original two-story frame Chase County Courthouse burned in February, 1910.
Joan said she has learned that the house originally sat where Winters Trailer Court is now located.
It was probably a four-room house with very high ceilings and leaded glass windows. Joan said she’d guess that a Meeker, probably Charles, built the house.
The building was moved to the site of the present Gale Johnson house at 710 W. 5th Street. It was also added on to towards the back of the house. Joan’s uncle, Cloyd Nesmith, rented it around that time.
