Contractor cleans up pool rust; city still holds out final payment PDF Print E-mail

While the general contractor for the city’s new pool has cleaned up rust on some of the pool’s exterior stainless steel, city officials remain uncomfortable with paying the contractor’s final bill.
At their May 10 meeting, city council members and the mayor approved a letter from the city’s engineer, Miller & Associates, to Simon Contractors of North Platte.
The letter signed by Reed Miller, states, in part, “The city appreciates the contractor’s efforts to clean the stainless steel but still feels uncomfortable with accepting the product.”
The letter questions why some stainless steel at the pool is corroding and some is not. Saying that the “passivation” process Simon used recently to clean the stainless steel may work, “the outcome will only be known after a given time period.”
With that said, the city has proposed that $21,490.50 still owed to Simon Contractors be put in an interest-bearing account with both their name and the city’s.
