The Chase County Longhorns closed out the regular season Friday with a 53-45 win over the Sutherland Sailors but couldn’t duplicate it with the season on the line Monday night.
The Longhorns saw their season come to an end Monday when they fell to the Sailors in the first round of the C2-11 subdistricts in McCook.
The big difference in the game came at the free throw line.
Despite outscoring the Sailors from the field 38-33, the Longhorns only converted two of 14 free throws while Sutherland went 11-14.
“That was the difference in the game,” Coach Carl Zuege said Tuesday, not to mention the easy shots off the glass the Longhorns couldn’t get to fall.
“We left at least a dozen points on the floor,” he noted, by not converting inside.
The Longhorns didn’t get their first free throws until late in the game after going 0-12 before that.
Despite that, Zuege said his squad played exceptionally well to overcome that and stay in the game.
In the regular season game Friday, senior Jeff Banks got the hot hand in the second half. He dropped six shots, including three treys, to score 19 points, all in the second half.
Monday, the Sailors made some adjustments and Banks couldn’t find the range. Zuege said his team was getting the kind of shots they wanted, they just didn’t fall.
Monday’s loss certainly wasn’t a case of overlooking Sutherland, Zuege noted.
The boys understood the meaning of the game, knowing a loss ended their season.
After beating Sutherland in the SPVA in overtime and then winning a close one Friday, the boys knew what kind of opponent they faced, he said.
Both games close
Both Friday’s and Monday’s games were close all the way.
Friday, the Longhorns jumped to an 11-8 lead only to have Sutherland close it to one at half, 18-17.
The Longhorns’ five-point lead after three quarters was their largest until the eight-point margin of victory.
On Monday, the Longhorns built a five-point, 15-10 lead with eight points from Alex Strand in the first quarter.
Then, Sutherland erased that advantage, holding the Longhorns to just four points in the second. With nine of their own, they knotted the game at half, 19-19.
In the third, junior Tanner Stromberger put in eight of the Longhorns’ 12 points to give Imperial a 31-30 lead going into the fourth.
As the game progressed, Zuege said the Longhorns became gun shy offensively. As Sutherland gained confidence, the Longhorns lost it, Zuege noted.
That showed up at the free throw line in the final quarter.
The Longhorns missed three pairs of two-shot free throw attempts along with the back side of a one-and-one.
Meanwhile, the Sailors went 6-9 at the line, along with four other baskets in the fourth, to claim the 44-40 victory and advance in the subdistrict.
Stromberger led the scoring Monday with 14, followed by Strand with 11.
In the regular season game Friday, Banks led all scorers with 19 points. Stromberger added 14 Friday night as well.
Zuege said the Longhorns did a good job Friday of realizing Banks had the hot hand and pushed the ball his way.
The Longhorns finished the regular season with four wins against 14 losses. Two of the four wins came against Sutherland, along with wins over Garden County and Goodland, Kan.
After the subdistrict loss, the Longhorns finished with a 4-15 mark.
In Tuesday’s C2-11 subdistrict games, Sutherland fell to top-seeded North Platte St. Pat’s 28-48 and Dundy County-Stratton defeated Perkins County 40-28.
St. Pat’s and DCS will play tonight (Thursday) to see who advances to the district final.
