Sub-districts next week

Just one regular season basketball game remains on the schedule for the Lady Longhorns’ varsity team.
After hosting Wauneta/Palisade Tuesday, Chase County will also be at home on Saturday, when SPVA foe Hershey comes to town for the final regular season game.
Technically, Saturday’s game doesn’t count for sub-district seeding as the NSAA released those brackets on Wednesday.
But, nonetheless, Coach Marc Mroczek said they will be working hard to prepare for the Lady Panthers, who are 13-4 this week.
Hershey will bring a very tough, full court man-to-man defense, Mroczek said, and his team will have to prepare a lot for handling that type of pressure.
Mroczek said Hershey’s varsity is very athletic with good team speed, and Chase County will have to slow them down by being patient on the offensive end and limit them to one shot on defense.
Action starts at 3:30 p.m. with the JV games, followed by girls’ varsity then boys’ varsity in the Longhorn gym.
Saturday is also Parents Night for both the girls’ and boys’ teams. The Lady Longhorns and their parents will be recognized between the girls’ JV and varsity games.
Based on the point standings this week, Chase County will be playing in Monday night’s game of the C2-11 sub-district tournament in McCook, and it will be against Sutherland for their third meeting this season.
Sutherland is sitting No. 5 for seeding in the five-team tourney this week, while Chase County has the No. 4 spot. Perkins County is expected to be top-seeded, followed by No. 2 St. Pat’s and No. 3 Dundy County/Stratton.
That means Chase County and Sutherland will play Monday at 6 p.m. MT. A win will put Chase County up against top-seeded Perkins County on Tuesday at 5 p.m. MT in the semi-finals. The finals will be played next Thursday, Feb. 18.
The winner of the C2-11 sub-district will meet the winner of the C2-12 sub-district in the district finals on Feb. 26.
St. Pat’s game
Chase County ran into a tough North Platte St. Pat’s team Friday night in North Platte.
The Lady Longhorns got off to a slow start in the first quarter, trailing 18-6, but they rebounded strongly in the second, outscoring the Lady Irish and pulling within 11 points as halftime arrived.
Coach Mroczek said a couple of late shots in the second quarter gave the Lady Longhorns some momentum heading into halftime. He hoped that would carry them through the next two quarters.
But, the second half proved offensively dismal for Chase County, as they were held to a total of just four points while St. Pat’s tallied 23, resulting in a 53-23 Chase County loss.
The loss dropped Chase County to 5-11 on the season.
Mroczek said he wanted his team to turn up their defense more in the second half by pressuring St. Pat’s on the perimeter, but Chase County wasn’t able to make the adjustments. The Lady Irish were given too many easy passes, resulting in scores, he said.
St. Pat’s also turned up their defensive pressure second half, and Chase County just didn’t handle it well, Mroczek said.
“We didn’t get a lot of offensive looks,” he said.
That was evident in the number of shots Chase County took from two-point range, just 32, less than half of the shots St. Pat’s attempted.
Chase County finished up nine of 32 from the field for 28%. That was the same percentage St. Pat’s had overall, but they hit 19 of 67.
St. Pat’s also had better marks beyond the arc and at the free throw line.
Karlee Palmer hit one of her four trey attempts, while St. Pat’s knocked down two of 10.
At the free throw line, the Lady Longhorns were two of six (33%), while St. Pat’s dropped in nine of 18 (50%).
It was the same on the boards, as North Platte grabbed 36 rebounds to 26 for Chase County.
Lexee Reichert and Alexis Tropf each scored six for Chase County to lead the team.
Reichert also brought down six rebounds, Shannon Liewer had two steals and Palmer had three assists.
