Five Longhorn wrestlers traveled to the Southwest Invitational on Saturday. Jeremiah Lueth brought home a championship and also the outstanding wrestler award.
Lueth pinned his way to the championship, having only two points scored against him all day. None of his matches even made it past the first period until the championship.
Chase Downey of Southwest was Lueth’s first win in just 1:36 followed by Jacob Brennemann of Medicine Valley in just 0:30 seconds.
Next came a familiar opponent in Tyler Frederick of Hershey. Lueth had no problem disposing of Frederick in just 1:18. In the finals it took 4:16 to pin Taylor Premer of Red Cloud/Blue Hill to earn the championship.
Coach Matt Vlasin said he was very pleased with the way Lueth wrestled.
“It is a very good time of the year to be peaking with districts approaching this week,” Vlasin said.
The 140 pound division is stacked with talent in the district so it will take a very good effort to advance to the state tournament, Vlasin added.
Tyler Roenfeldt had a good showing at Southwest also. After winning his first two matches by pins, Roenfeldt came up against Adam Simpson of Hitchcock County/           Wauneta Palisade. Simpson boasts a record with just one loss on the year.
Roenfeldt found out why as he was pinned in just 0:57 seconds. In the consolation semi-finals, Roenfeldt faced Jacob Larue of Oberlin Decatur Community. Late in the third period, Roenfeldt got his hips out of shape and Larue was able to step over and secure a pin.
Other wrestlers participating at the tournament were Makayla Bell, Misael Garcia and Jesse Ferebee.
Team scoring was Oberlin Decatur Community 161.5, Medicine Valley 135, Cambridge 112, Southwest 102, Franklin 99, Southern Valley 69, Red Cloud Blue Hill 60, Hershey 55, Hitchcock Co./Wauneta-Palisade 45, Chase County 36, Dundy County/Stratton 29, Gothenburg 13 and McCook 9.5.
