It took an extra four minutes but the Longhorns came away from the SPVA tournament with a 51-41 overtime win against Sutherland Saturday.
The win gave the Longhorns a fifth-place finish in the tournament after losing their opener to Hershey, 49-37.
It also improved the Longhorns’ record to 3-10.
“It was nice to get a win,” Coach Carl Zuege said. “Now maybe we can get a run going.”
While the Longhorns outscored the Sutherland Sailors 12-2 in the overtime, Zuege said the ’Horns didn’t protect their lead towards the end of regulation.
Up by seven late in the fourth, Sutherland connected on three treys to knot the game 39-39.
The Longhorns inflicted some of their own pain as well, succumbing to Sailor pressure and turning the ball over late. “We just got to going too fast,” Zuege said.
The Longhorns have let some games get away late but they didn’t this time.
In the overtime, the Longhorns controlled the tip. While they failed to score on that possession, they scored on nearly every one after that.
Plus, they limited the Sailors to just two free throws in the overtime to claim a 51-41 win.
Playing without their leading scorer, Tanner Stromberger, Zuege said his team responded well. Stromberger was showing cattle at the National Western Stock Show in Denver and missed the game.
In his absence, junior Charlie Haarberg stepped up big and led the Longhorns with 19 points.
“Charlie had a huge game,” Zuege said. “He did a great job picking us up offensively.”
Zuege said Haarberg grabbed offensive rebounds, got put-backs, fast break buckets and hit some jumpers off the post position.
Jeff Banks finished the game in double figures with 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
Another big key to the win proved to be the Longhorns’  free throw shooting.
That’s been a bane for the team this season but one wouldn’t have known it Saturday.
The Longhorns hit 12 of 20 attempts, including 11 of 14 in the second half and overtime.

Hershey
In the SPVA opener against Hershey Tuesday, Jan. 19, the Longhorns only got to the line six times, making four.
After a slow start, the Longhorns rallied back to knot the score 8-8 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, Hershey hit three consecutive 3-pointers to go up 10-20.  By half, the Longhorns got the deficit back to eight, 14-22.
Imperial scored the first six points of the second half to pull within two, 20-22. However, that proved to be the closest the Longhorns would get, falling by 12, 37-49.
The loss put the Longhorns in the fifth place game against Sutherland, who fell to Perkins County in their opener.
Perkins County defeated Maxwell for the SPVA championship while Hershey defeated North Platte St. Pat’s in the consolation game.
