High school bowling season underway; Chase County’s two teams split first meets PDF Print E-mail

Twelve students at Chase County Schools are competing in another season of high school bowling, which kicked off the season Dec. 5 with a meet in Imperial.
Both a boys’ and girls’ team are bowling this year, involving two more bowlers than last year, said Coach Denise Smith.
At the opening here Dec. 5 against Ogallala, the girls’ team took a 17-4 win, while Chase County’s boys lost 18-3.
Smith said the format for meets is the same as last year, as set up by the Nebraska High School Bowling Federation.
Five bowlers compete on a team, and go head-to-head against a bowler from the opposing team for two games. Each high bowler in each game gets a point for his/her team, and the team winner (all five scores tallied) gains another three points. They do that twice, then take a break.
In the second part of the meet, a “Baker’s Format” is used, in which the five bowlers on each team take turns bowling a frame in each of three games. The team winning two of three games gets an additional five points.
The Chase County teams are classified Class C, but all of their regular season competition is Class B, Smith noted. Once they get to districts, they’ll bowl against Class C teams then.
Also coaching with Smith is Kelen Fortkamp. Meets in Imperial are held at Imperial Lanes.
Smith said the Federation would like to see the NSAA begin sanctioning bowling as a high school sport, and it appears it may be moving in that direction.
Members of Chase County’s teams are:
Boys—Chevy Smith, Sean Mandeville, Perry Vetter, Eric Lakey, Nick Mullanix, Jared Knobbe.
Girls—Breanna Carman, Taylor Wilson, Cassie Carman, Kacia Smith, Sabrina Hayes, Abby Polly.
Here is the remaining season schedule for Chase County:

Jan. 9—At Ogallala (quad)
Jan. 16—At Alliance (quad)
Jan. 23—at Imperial vs. Sidney
