Chase County opened the 2009-2010 wrestling season Dec. 3 with a double dual held in Oshkosh with Bridgeport rounding out the teams.
Head Coach Matt Vlasin said he saw a lot of good things out of his wrestlers at the opening meet. Some wrestlers were still working on cutting weight to get to the weight desired but he saw a lot of good things at the opening meet.
“Our kids need to focus on the fundamentals and work off a little of the rust from the off season,” Coach Vlasin said.
Due to low numbers and open weight classes there were only three head to head matches in the dual with Garden County. Two of the three wrestlers in action were wrestling their first high school matches.
Andrei Rodriguez, a senior who is out for his first year of wrestling in high school after participating in his earlier years, started slow getting pinned in his first match but bounced right back to win his second match by a pin.
Misael Garcia, a junior who has not seen action since junior high wrestling, made his high school debut losing his first match by pin   then coming back strong to win his second match quickly with a pin in just one minute into the match.
The only other match in the first dual was senior Tyler Roenfeldt who had no problem pinning Michael Zorn. Roenfeldt is coming off a football injury so will see limited action for the first part of the season.
The points at the end of the dual were knotted at 48 apiece. The tie breaker for duals states if the teams are tied you look at the team that won the most head to head matches. Since Garden County won two out of the three matches they won the tie breaker.
In the second dual against Bridgeport, coach Vlasin knew it would be very difficult to pull out a win because, although Chase County was getting 12 points from forfeits, they were giving up 30.
That didn’t seem to bother the wrestlers as they won four out of the five matches by pins, pulling out a two point victory 42-40. Coach Vlasin was very pleased with their performance stating it was a long shot going into the dual.
