Carl Bartels, 44, of Enders died in a two-vehicle accident, two miles southwest of Paoli, Colo., on Sunday, Oct. 18. The accident occurred about 5 p.m.
Bartels was traveling west on County Road 22 when his 1993 Chevrolet S-10 struck Richelle Chappell, 26, of Wray, Colo. who was traveling south on County Road 17.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, Bartels failed to yield at the uncontrolled intersection and struck Chappell in the left side. Both vehicles went off the southwest corner of the intersection.
Bartels’ vehicle rolled three quarters of a time and he was ejected. According to the State Patrol report, he wasn’t wearing his seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Chappell’s 2007 Chevrolet pickup rolled a half time coming to rest on its roof. Chappell was wearing a seat belt and sustained serious injuries. She was taken to Melissa Memorial Hospital in Holyoke, Colo.
Colorado Trooper Mike Hill investigated the accident, which is still under investigation.
Bartels, the son of Wayne and Donna Bartels of Enders, was a Chase County High School graduate in 1984. After high school, he attended Southeast Community College in Lincoln, where he studied electronics, then attended classes at Southeast Community College in Milford in its diesel mechanics program.
At the time of his death, Bartels had his own vehicle and truck repair business in Enders.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. MT at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Wauneta, with Pastor Keith Wellman officiating. Interment will follow at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in rural Wauneta.
