As of Tuesday, 21 children had signed up for the Southwestern Nebraska Pheasants Forever youth hunt this Saturday. The hunt will be held on the Donnie Weiss farm in Chase County.
Pheasants Forever habitat chair Heather Francis said there are more youth signed up than usual. Last year 18 participated.
To spend the day with an adult mentor, the youth must have passed the gun safety course. They are between the ages of 12 and 15, she said.
The day, which begins at 9 a.m., consists of a gun safety training session, gun cleaning and wildlife habitat information. The youth will also be able to shoot 25 blue rocks.
They then go on a pheasant hunt with their mentor.
Youth chair for the chapter, and in charge of the youth/mentor hunt, is Tanner Bardsley of Wauneta.
