Firefighters volunteer time to teach students PDF Print E-mail

Last Friday, members of the Imperial Volunteer Fire Department were the teachers at Chase County Schools, as they presented fire prevention education to students in the three kindergarten classes that morning. Above, firefighters Duane Todd and Dirk Hill (in uniform) explain how the air tank is used, and at right, Hill gives students a close-up view of how a fireman will look if having to enter their homes, emphasizing they shouldn’t be afraid. Fire Prevention Week was observed this year from Oct. 4-10. The special week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 event that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on Oct. 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on Oct. 9, 1871. The IVFD also visited local preschools last week. (Republican photos)
