Cross placed following ‘Happy Jack’ Memorial Run PDF Print E-mail

On Saturday, the first annual “Happy Jack” Memorial Run was held in honor of Jack Carman of Imperial, who passed away on Sept. 27, 2008, as a result of a motorcycle accident.
Approximately 40 motorcycles, five to 10 automobiles and 75 people, which included members of ABATE of Nebraska District 12, Car Nutz Car Club, the American Veterans Motorcycle Club and family and friends of Jack’s, left the VFW in Imperial at 9 a.m. and traveled to the location of the accident between Benkelman and Bird City, Kan.
The group was met at the Nebraska/Kansas border by the Cheyenne County, Kan., Sheriff’s Department, and escorted to the site.
Brother Jim Carman, and brother-in-law, DeWayne Fanning, placed a cross at the site which reads “In Loving Memory of ‘Happy Jack’ 1947-2008.” The cross was given to Jack’s wife, Mary Carman, by Jack’s nephew, Darcy Pfortmiller, of North Platte, who had a friend make it for him.
Randy Bartlett offered a prayer following the placement of the cross.
Following the memorial, several of the riders and vehicles went on to Goodland, Kan., for the bike and car show, which was the original destination of Jack and his friends last year when he had his accident.
Everyone then returned to the VFW for a supper provided by the VFW Auxiliary, Mary Carman and family and the Car Nutz Car Club.
