Chase County’s start in the 2008-09 high school wrestling season was fast and furious.
After traveling to a double dual with Garden County and Bridgeport last Thursday, they were on the road again Friday for the Broken Bow tournament on Saturday.
Coach Matt Vlasin said the busy first week of wrestling showed some good things, but also that they weren’t in as good of condition as anticipated.
There were also those “little mistakes,” Vlasin said, that show up early in the season.
In addition, the Longhorns had a couple of wrestlers ineligible to participate last week.
At last Thursday’s double dual in Oshkosh, the Longhorns beat Garden County, but lost the match to Bridgeport by a point.
Nine Longhorns competed in the double dual, although senior Sean Langin hurt a shoulder in the first match with Garden County and didn’t wrestle against Bridgeport.
While the team lacked some intensity in the first match with Garden County, Coach Vlasin said that improved against Bridgeport later in the night.
Some of those early mistakes, though, again showed up in the Bridgeport match, he said.

Broken Bow tourney
Chase County wrestlers came home with three medals from Saturday’s tournament in Broken Bow, their first tourney of the season.
Jeremy Mathews captured the second place medal at 189 lbs., while Keithan Cochran at 103 and Justin Lueth at 135 took thirds.
Coach Vlasin gave Mathews a lot of credit in finishing second, considering he was giving up eight to 10 lbs., in each of his matches Saturday.
Mathews will soon be dropping to the 171 lb. class, Vlasin said.
“That’s a real credit to him,” Vlasin said.
Lueth at 135 lost his first round match, but came all the way through the consolation bracket, winning all three matches to take third. He won a major decision in the consolation finals.
After a first round win, Cochran lost in the semi-finals at 103, but came back strong, winning his two consolation matches with pins to take home third.
Vlasin said his team’s first rounds were a bit rough, as the Longhorns committed some little mistakes that cost.
However, he said the Longhorns improved as the day progressed.
“Our later rounds were definitely the best ones of the day,” he said.
Chase County finished seventh in team points out of 11. Vlasin said the top three scoring teams from Central City, Madison and Grand Island Central Catholic were stacked with good wrestlers.
“That was one of the tougher Broken Bow tournaments we’ve been at,” he said.
Team scoring was Central City 197, Madison 143, Grand Island CC 120, St. Paul 101.5, Newman Grove 72.5, Gothenburg 65.5, Chase County 52, North Platte St. Pat’s 51, Broken Bow 46, Holdrege 42 and Ord 37.

Holdrege tourney this week
Chase County has just one tournament on the schedule this week on Saturday in Holdrege.
Due to the ACT exam that day, varsity wrestling will start between 11 and 11:30 a.m. (CT). JV wrestling starts at 9:30 a.m. (CT).
Eleven to 12 teams are expected for the tournament, including several Chase County will see only at this tourney. Those include Grand Island NW, Lincoln North Star and Smith Center, Kan.
Coach Vlasin anticipates the return of Cole Crider and Nathan Hinojosa to the competition this week.
