Chase County’s boys’ cross country team captured their first title of the season by winning the Cambridge Invitational held there Friday.
The Longhorns tallied just 26 points to win the meet by 13 points over Dundy County-Stratton.
Tyler Talbott and Kyle Bottom paced the Longhorns, finishing second and third overall.
Alec Spady, Shane German and Tom Sullivan finished 11th, 12th and 13th respectively to help wrap up the title for the Longhorns.
In his first cross country meet  ever, junior Joel Fisher finished 21st in the 37-man field.
Coach Carl Zuege said the boys ran especially well for their first time out.
Talbott and Bottom stayed together at the front with Spady, German and Sullivan all together early in the field of finishers.
Zuege expected Talbott and Bottom to run near the top and said they will continue to improve.
He said Spady, German and Sullivan all push each other and could finish in any order in any given race, which is a real plus for the team, especially in terms of depth.
He said they all push themselves competitively in practice which is only going to make them better in meets.
The girls ran fifth as a team, led by Jilanne German who finished 22nd in the field of 56 runners. Breanna Krutsinger ran 25th in the field.
The girls finished with 87 points which meant they finished well ahead of the pack, Zuege said.
While there were no medalists for the girls, Zuege said they are not far off.
This was the first race for three of his girls, Shanna Carter, Kacia Smith and Lydia Harmon. Zuege said they all competed well and will figure out the race strategy as the season continues.
This week, the Longhorns hold their own meet at the Imperial Country Club today (Thursday) beginning at 3:30 p.m. MT with the girls’ race followed by the boys’ race at approximately 4 p.m.
