Second Bauerle cookbook to be published

     If you have a yellow-covered cookbook sitting on your counter, published in 1977, you may be interested to know that there will soon be a second Bauerle family cookbook in print.
     "Country Cooking II" is being edited by Diane Bauerle of Denver, daughter of Lucille and Burdette Bauerle of Imperial. The original one was published by her aunt, Garneta Bauerle of Champion.

Investigators looking at 'people of interest' following Friday threat

     As of Tuesday, no arrests had been made related to Friday's bomb threat at Chase County Schools.
     But, Imperial Police Chief Larry Browning said they have made very good progress on possible suspects since Friday's incident, which cleared staff and students from the school after a 45-minute lock-down.

Five Republicans vying for open Dist. 1 county commissioner seat

     In less than two weeks, Nebraska voters will go to the polls during the May 13 primary, deciding which candidates will advance to November's general election.
     The race for the District 1 seat for Chase County Commissioner, however, will be wrapped up in May, with all five candidates running on the Republican ticket. With no Democratic candidates, and barring unforeseen write-in candidacies, whoever wins the primary race will be District 1's next commissioner.

Work begins on houses accepted for Owner Occupied Rehab project

     Four houses in Imperial are being renovated under the Owner Occupied Rehabilitation program using Community Development Block Grant funds. A fifth house is in the approval stage, while a sixth is in the bidding process.
     The houses are receiving a combination of the following: new windows and doors, exterior repair and painting, gutters and down spouts, new heating and cooling systems, new bathroom fixtures, interior plaster repair and insulation.

Talbott, Kunnemann reign as Prom king, queen

    Nick Talbott and Cara Kunnemann, above center, were chosen by the Chase County Schools' junior class as 2008 Prom king and queen Saturday night. Other seniors honored as royalty candidates were, at left, Erica Pirog and Jordan Stromberger and, at right, Trevor Rowley and Jordan German. This year's Prom followed a Hollywood theme, and included a Promenade before the dance when a lot of camera flashes were going. Following the dance, the Chase County juniors and seniors and their dates enjoyed the after-Prom activities at the school organized by the parents. (Republican photos)

     Voters in this year's primary election can review the sample ballots in preparation for the May 13 Primary.
     The ballots appear inside on page 7 of this week's edition.
     The primary includes ballots for the Democratic, Republican, Nebraska and Green Parties, along with a non-partisan ticket.

One section of pool floor left to pour

    As every week progresses, the new Imperial swimming pool moves a little closer to completion. Last Friday, workers with Simon Contractors poured three different sections of the pool floor, leaving just one more-the slanted section at right-to be poured. Work continues on the locker room/concession facility and the mechanical area for the pool is under construction. The drainage system has already been installed around the top of the pool structure but plenty of work, both inside and outside the pool, remains. (Republican photos)

New postmaster in Elsie has Imperial tie

    Billie Shaw was sworn in as the official Postmaster of the Elsie U.S. Post Office on Thursday, April 17.
     She began her duties in Elsie in January, but was officially installed by JoAnn Miller, acting manager of postal office operations out of North Platte, during ceremony at the post office.
     Several Elsie residents were present for the event as well as area postmasters, including Mitzi Gartrel of Wallace, Jerry Lines of Imperial, Bob Bounds of Grant and Mary Bieber of Big Springs. Also present were members of Shaw's family.

Trees are focus of Arbor Day events

     Arbor Day was celebrated last Friday both in Nebraska and across the country.
     At the Imperial city council's April 21 meeting last week, three students from the Chase County Schools' fourth grade classes told about their trip to Lincoln, where they represented the city at the state's Tree City USA activities.

Southwest area responders participate in regional training exercises

    A tornado strikes a village and critical infrastructure with large amounts of damage. Who and what will be needed to respond?
     That was one of the questions asked of participants at a recent training exercise held in McCook April 18.
     The Southwest Regional Exercise Design Team made up of emergency management from Dundy, Hitchcock, Red Willow, Furnas, Hayes, Chase and Perkins Counties, law enforcement and First Responders worked with exercise planners from ICF International in Fairfax, VA to put together the tabletop scenario.

     High school students went home with numerous certificates and medals Monday from the annual academic honors night.
     Recognition was given in the areas of journalism, English, science, art, business, music, as well as in activity areas including student council, quiz bowl and National Honor Society.

Postage headed upward May 12

     Imperial Postmaster Jerry Lines said he's already seen some increased activity in stamp sales.
     That's most likely in anticipation of a pending postal rate increase set to take effect Monday, May 12.
     Lines said just about everything will be going up consistent with the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006. That law allows adjustment of rates each May, but increases aren't to be higher than the inflation rate.

Lady Longhorns secure SPVA title

     It was close, but the Lady Longhorn track team pulled out another SPVA conference track title, this year for the 20th straight time.
     Perkins County battled Chase County all day, and had the lead at several times, but in the end, the Lady Longhorns took the title by a 15-point margin.

Spickelmier wins bull riding in weekend performances

     Imperial senior Miles Spickelmier got his spring rodeo season off to a big start, winning both performances of the bull riding at last weekend's high school rodeo here in Imperial.
     On Saturday, Spickelmier scored a 69 to win first after regaining his balance midway in the ride.

Town team baseball will organize this summer

     Many of Imperial's standout baseball players from Legion teams of the past and present will make up a new team in Imperial this summer.
     Known as Imperial Crush, the team will take part in the Nebraska Baseball Association organized last summer to promote town team baseball in communities across the state.

Hayes, DeHart medal at SPVA golf meet, team finishes fourth

     Longhorn golf coach figured his team would battle for third or fourth with Sutherland at this year's SPVA conference meet.
     Imperial beat Sutherland at the Imperial invite and the two teams tied at the Perkins County invite.
     On Friday, Sutherland came away with third place, beating the Longhorns by seven strokes on the Oshkosh Country Club course.

SPVA boys' title goes to Perkins County this year

     2008 will go down as one of the few years in the past three decades that the Chase County boys did not bring home the SPVA conference track title.
     By a 27-point margin, Perkins County captured the championship this year, only the second time in the past 30 years the trophy didn't head home to Imperial.

2007 taxable sales up in Imperial over 2006

Increase attributed to fuel prices, crop prices, more shopping at home

     A number of factors may have contributed to an increase in net taxable sales in Imperial this past year.
     According to statistics provided by Economic Development Director Leslie Carlholm of the city of Imperial, 2007 net taxable sales were $3.2 million higher than in 2006.

Eleven months of city sales tax in bank

     With one month left before a full year of city sales tax money is banked, Imperial has passed the projections for its annual receipts.
     As Imperial residents were considering adding the one percent, or one cent on the dollar, sales tax to start April, 2007, annual projections for the city were put at $275,000. That figure was based on previous retail sales in the city.

Co-op storage tubes getting facelift

    There's been a lot of dust raised at the Frenchman Valley Co-op site in Imperial in recent weeks. Since mid-April, a crew with Midwest Paint Service of Black Hawk, S. D., has been busy sandblasting all of the co-op's storage tubes and will also do the head houses. That will be followed by a fresh coat of white paint, which one worker described, when finished, will be "really white." Above, two sandblaster were busy on the east and north sides of the storage tubes early last week, while another pair worked a few days earlier. The work is expected to take a couple of months. No-till best when used with rotations, cover crops

     No-till farming alone is not the answer. No-till really shines when it is used in combination with crop rotations and cover cropping. It is a "system" and needs to be managed as a system.
     Here in southwest Nebraska, where we have low rainfall and high winds, cover cropping is used religiously as a tool to control wind erosion. The increase in organic manner is a big reason to choose cover crops in your rotation.

Marvin Large elected to Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement

     Marvin Large joined elite company April 18 when he was elected as a member of the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement.
     Large joins about 200 members from across Nebraska who are dedicated to preserving and improving Nebraska agriculture.
     Marvin and his wife, Arlene, moved on to her family's farm north of Wauneta along the Stinking Water Creek in 1955.

Work ethic impressive in lives of 100 year olds

    I met two incredible women recently who were both full of inspiration. A positive drive and a very obvious hard work ethic leave both with fascinating stories galore. They've certainly had time to accumulate those tales having each lived a century.
    That's right, Emma Mae Colson of Imperial and Mildred Heath of Overton each celebrated their 100th birthday this year. Wow. And what's even more impressive about the stories they have to tell is not just the generational experiences but the fact that they remember them.

School incident has eerie similarities to 1999 threat

    It's not the kind of news parents with kids in school want to hear.
     Or, any residents of a small town, for that matter.
     When this newspaper got word of a bomb threat at Chase County Schools Friday afternoon, my immediate emotion was a queasy gut feeling.
     My youngest child graduated from Chase County Schools last year, so I don't have children as students here now. It still left me a little shaken, however, as I'm sure most people were, whether they had students physically in the school or not.
